Bookkeeping Business Information
65Start a Bookkeeping Business
Although many economists are predicting that the economy as a whole is turning around, most of them also believe that it will take a while to get back to where we were (if we ever get back). The poor economy has left many people looking for alternative ways to make money and sustain themselves. One excellent ways is starting a bookkeeping business.
What is Bookkeeping?
Although many people find accounting in general dull, bookkeeping can be quite rewarding. Basically as a bookkeeper it is your job to make sure that the financial information of a company is organized correctly. It can be exciting to see a company transaction and have to determine what journal entry needs to be made. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
Bookkeepers keep track of financial information in ledgers. A ledger is
basically just something that is used to track different economic
information. For example, there is a sales ledger that tracks all of the
company’s sales. There is also an expense ledger that tracks a
company’s expense. Ledgers can be pieces of paper or more commonly,
electronic spreadsheets. If you want to have a home based bookkeeping
business, then you’ll definitely need to understand ledgers.
Where Can I Learn Bookkeeping?
The most popular place to learn bookkeeping is a college or university.
Universities often take a more theoretical approach, but they will
definitely help you build a strong accounting background (where you
learn all of the accounting rules) that would help you understand
bookkeeping.
Not everybody has two to four years to burn learning how to do
bookkeeping. The truth is you probably don’t need a college degree to
work as a bookkeeper. Most small businesses are happy to bring anybody
on as long as they know what they are doing. There are both paid and
free online courses that you can take to help you understand
bookkeeping. Most of these courses are a lot more practical than
University courses so doing it this way you will get a lot more hands on
experience. Actual experience is the best way to learn bookkeeping.
After you’ve done it for a little while, bookkeeping becomes relatively
easy.
How Much Can I Get Paid?
The pay for bookkeepers will vary according to the normal factors like
geography, education, and experience. However, don’t be fooled by the
promises online to make $80 an hour starting out. Most local shops will
only pay $10 an hour for a full-time bookkeeper. However, some shops are
willing to pay a lot more for someone who starts a bookkeeping business
and can come in once a week and perform all the bookkeeping tasks in a
few hours. If you get enough clients like this, then it is possible to
make $80 an hour, but you would have to be really busy.
Starting your own bookkeeping business can be a great way to get some
extra cash, but remember that you’ll have to put in a time or money
investment up front to be able to learn bookkeeping.
